San Francisco—known locally as San Pancho—is a picturesque fishing village on Mexico’s Pacific coast in the state of Nayarit. About 30 miles north of Puerto Vallarta, it is convenient to transportation and other city offerings but feels worlds away.

With tropical sandy beaches, jungle-covered hills and a town center lined with cobblestone streets, San Pancho is perfect for those who prefer a quieter, more relaxed vacation setting.

Not sheltered by a bay like in many resort towns, the ocean here is better suited to surfing and sailing than swimming, but the beach is still the highlight. It is rarely crowded, even during high season. Watch the diving pelicans, sip a drink under a palapa (thatched hut), catch a glimpse of a passing whale or dolphin, or take a walk down to the estuary to see the colorful tropical birds. The area is widely known for its bird- and whale-watching.

Snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, horseback riding and golf are among the many other activities to enjoy.

And you won’t go hungry. Hours vary by season, but you'll find a variety of restaurants in town, from taco stands to beachfront cafes to fine dining. The town of Sayulita, a few miles down the coast, offers more shopping and dining options.

At the end of the day, don’t miss the opportunity to join the locals on the beach for another breathtaking sunset in San Pancho!
